My Beatles guitar brooch 1964
All Beatles fans remember what it was like on Sunday February 9, 1964, when the Beatles were to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show for the very first time. In North America we'd listened to their records, had all the magazines and decided which moptop we were going to marry, but we'd actually never seen the Beatles play before. I was only 11 and, like my friends, I counted the days -- no the minutes -- when we'd finally get to see them live.
Here's what I wrote in my book:
...Then the amazing day came when it was announced that the Beatles were going to be on the telly. At that point they had three songs in the Top Ten, and were being flown to America to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. Luckily we could see that show in Canada too, or I'd have emigrated. I counted the hours. I'd reserved the family's TV weeks in advance and set up camp in front of the set.
The night the Beatles were on they played live and 73 million viewers tuned in. Make that 73 million and me. It was the biggest audience television had ever known. I envied the fans actually there in the studio, who were mainly girls about my age. They were screaming and crying, obviously having the time of their lives...
