George Martin was a musical genius, visionary and gentleman. When he first met the young Beatles, he recognised that they were bursting with unique musical and composing talent. Sir George helped John, Paul, George and Ringo to channel that energy into their recordings, push it to new heights and give it to the world.
I met George Martin in 2009 when the famous Abbey Road studios were under threat of being sold off to property developers. A charity do was organised at Studio 2, the Beatles' old recording studio at Abbey Road; the smaller of the two. Robert Plant sang and it wasn't long before Sir George started a sing-a-long, conducting us vigourously from the stage. Cynthia Lennon was there as well and I remember thinking I must be one of the few people to have sung with both Cynthia and Yoko Ono -- though, I hasten to add, not at the same time.
The highlight of the evening was when Sir George gave a rousing speech worthy of Henry V leading his troops into battle. Sir George vowed that Abbey Road would be razed to the ground by property developers over his dead body. He called upon everyone in the music industry to join with him in saving the Abbey Road studios. Thanks to George Martin, they were and an important part of British musical history stands today.
