A few years ago I was involved in a rock memorabilia auction at Christie's when I sold JOHN LENNON's original handwritten lyrics to Give Peace A Chance, which John gave me at the Bed-In. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life and through it, I made many good friends. One of them was John's friend and publisher, Tom Maschler, and now it's Tom's turn to have an auction of his own.
It was Tom who persuaded John to write his books, In His Own Write and A Spaniard In The Works. Soon Tom will be selling more than 100 of Lennon’s drawings, poems and prose at Sotheby's in June. Included are 89 papers from the making of John's books. There are also hand-corrected Mersey Beat magazine pages and Lennon’s drawings of a magnifying glass, a tiny man and a four-eyed guitarist.
The auction will take place at Sotheby's in New York on 4 June. In the lead-up to the sale, the items will be on display at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, on 13-14 March and at Sotheby’s London from 21-25 March.
I'll definitely be viewing John's works and I recommend you do too, whether on-line or in person. And hopefully, on the day of the auction, we won't be bidding against each other!
